MM3670, Lesson 2
USING OUTLOADING DRAWINGS
Refer to figure 2-4. To use the outloading drawing, read the itemized index, a listing with page
numbers of all the information found in the outloading drawing. "General Notes" is the first item in the
index. Always read the general notes, for they apply to all the procedures used in the outloading
drawing (figure 2-5). Then read "Details," the last item listed in the index. This is the section that
shows how to construct bracing and other special items for securing the load (figures 2-6 and 2-7).
Different items, or combinations of items for loading on various types of vehicles make up the other
listings in the index.
To find out what you need to tie down one Lance missile main assemblage, one nuclear warhead,
control surfaces, and demolition material on one 5-ton cargo truck, check the index on page 3 of the
outloading drawing in figure 2-4 for the page that shows the load you are looking for. It is page 10,
figure 2-8. Note each loading diagram has a series of circled numbers, the key numbers, pointing out
pertinent items in the diagram. A list of key number explanations is provided on the same page with the
diagram.
Read the key number explanations. Get the requirements for web strap tie-downs by adding the tie-
down straps specified in key numbers 2 through 8. Remember to read the general notes. General
notes L and S (figure 2-5), for example, directly affect the requirements for this load. Detail D also
affects the requirements for this load (figure 2-7).
Key number 1 requires one floor blocking assembly. It directs the user to page 27 of the outloading
drawing (figure 2-6) for the details on constructing it.
The placement of demolition material is on page 10 of the outloading drawing (see figure 2-8, top).
(Note: Demolition material is used if emergency destruction of the material being transported is
required.)
Securing demolition caps is explained in general note S on page 2 of the outloading drawing (see figure
2-5) and detailed on page 28 (figure 2-7). Five sandbags are needed to secure the demolition caps in
the vehicle.
According to the outloading drawing and details, to load one complete Lance missile and demolition
materials on a 5-ton cargo truck, you would need:
Web tie-down straps (18 each). (Key numbers 2 through 8, figure 2-8.) Rachet, tension.
Lumber, 4" x 4" (two pieces, 13" long). (Key number 1, figure 2-8, and detail, figure 2-6).
Lumber, 2" x 4" (one piece, 10' long). (Key number 1, figure 2-8, and detail, figure 2-6).
Nails, 10d (6 each). (Key number 1, figure 2-8, and detail, figure 2-6.)
Sandbags (5 each). (General note S, figure 2-5, and detail, figure 2-7.)
