Purging kit, fire control is the standard dry nitrogen charging system authorized for use
with all night vision devices covered in this subcourse. Another system has been introduced
called the purge device which has the same function as the purging kit fire control with added
features. The purge device is used with the purging kit fire control and provides the ability to
apply vacuum to a sealed device to determine prior to charging if there are any leaks. The purge
device (NSN 5855-01-246-6815) consists of the following: (See Figure 1.)

Vacuum hose set - Consists of three hoses and one hand pump.

Device housing - Consists of a connection box with two switches, a gauge, and
relief valve.

Valve - Consists of one AN/PVS-5/ABC/7AB connector adapter and one screw
on hose adapter that permits use with other night vision systems.

Tool - A tool to remove the purge cover of the AN/PVS-7A.
*
Carrying case - A soft-sided case for carrying and storing the purge device.

The purge device is specifically called for in the purging of night vision goggles
AN/PVS-5/A/B/C and AN/PVS-7A/B. However at present there are no specific instructions on
its use with other night vision devices. It should be noted that the use of the purge device
eliminates the need to open the sealed cavity of the night vision device. Generally, night vision
devices should be purged and filled a total of four times. The initial purge and fill, plus three
additional purge and fill actions, comprise a complete cycle of the purging of night vision
devices.
