INTRODUCTION.
a. If you are assigned to a TMDE support team, the van becomes your
workshop during the calibration cycle. Emplacing the van and preparing it
for operation is one of the keys to the successful completion of the team
mission.
b. This lesson will provide you with a general knowledge of selecting a
suitable site to emplace the van, the van body operation, electrical system
operation, and operation of the powered lift gate.
2.
SELECTING A SUITABLE SITE.
The TMDE support team has a number of
things to accomplish immediately after arriving at a supported unit. One of
the first things to accomplish is selecting a suitable site to emplace the
van. In selecting the site, consideration should be given to availability
of electrical power, level terrain, access to equipment being calibrated,
and adequate area for expansion of the vans and operation of the lift gate.
a. In instances where the team does not have its own power generator,
the team chief must make arrangements with the unit to use one of their
generators or hook up to commercial power when available. The van requires
120/208 Volt, 3-phase, 60 Hz, 4-connector power. Access to the power source
must be readily available.
b. Another important consideration is the terrain. If at all possible,
the van should be emplaced on level hard land. If a level, hard surfaced
area is not available, select level terrain whenever possible.
When
necessary, fill in the low areas with rubble, sand, or other suitable
material.
c. Most of the units visited by a TMDE support team support tactical
units; therefore, the volume of equipment requiring calibration will include
test, measurement, and diagnostic equipment from the tactical units in
addition to the equipment of the DS/GS units. If the van can be located in
close proximity to the maintenance shop, transport of equipment can be held
to a minimum.
d. Finally, the area selected must permit expansion of the van and
operation of the lift gate.

DESCRIPTION OF VAN BODY AND EQUIPMENT.
Although there may be
differences in van models, this description generally applies to all vans.
