To avoid the assumption of the earlier Poggendorf circuit of Figure
1-1, in which the current through Ex was considered to be essentially zero,
the modern "slide wire" type potentiometer was devised.
In this type, an
auxiliary or "working battery" has been added to maintain a constant current
through its associated calibrated resistance. Its basic circuit is shown in
Figure 1-2.
