(3) Because the load on the beam is the same at all times, the sensitivity of the balance remains constant. This permits
the use of a direct reading scale. If the sample placed on pan 2 is not exactly equal to the weight removed from pan 1,
the difference can be shown on a calibrated scale. Thus the substitution weighing eliminates any effects due to the
inequality of arms and the constant loading eliminates the possible change in sensitivity due to changing load.
4. Voland Jupiter J5000S. Theory of Operation
a. The balance that we will be concerned with is the Voland Jupiter J5000S which is a direct reading substitution balance
designed as a mass comparator with a capacity of 5 kg and readable to 1 mg. It can be used for comparing either metric
weights up to 5 kg or conventional pound weights up to 10 lbs. A digital electronic display permits direct reading of the weight
under test. An on-scale range of 1.0 g permits the calibration of weights with relatively large corrections. Push-button Zero and
Range controls permit rapid calibration of the instrument. A built -in 1 g standard weight is used for instantaneous full-scale
calibration, virtually eliminating the need for balance adjustments. A serial output in BCD form can be connected directly to a
computer for data collection and processing.
