INTRODUCTION

The direction finder set AN/ARN-89 is part of a family of equipment
known as the standard lightweight avionics equipment (SLAE) package.
The
other items of equipment that make up the package are radio sets AN/ARC-114,
AN/ARC-115, and AN/ARC-116 and communications system control C-6533/ARC.

Although the maintenance kit MK-994 is not an actual part of the SLAE
package, you should be thoroughly familiar with it. The MK-994/AR is used
to operate and test all components of the SLAE family of equipment.
Included as part of the MK-994/AR are all cables and tools needed to connect
the SLAE equipment to the maintenance kit.

The AN/ARN-89 is an automatic direction finder operating in the 100-to
3,000-kHz frequency range and is used for receiving CW or AM radio frequency
signals. The AN/ARN-89 has three modes of operation. They are the compass
mode (provides automatic homing), the loop mode (used in manual homing), and
