INSPECTING THE MAINTENANCE
OF STORAGE AREA AND FACILITIES
INSPECTING MAGAZINE STORAGE
Magazine storage is the preferred method of storing ammunition and explosives. When inspecting
magazine.
Fire Symbol and Chemical Hazard Symbol
As you approach the magazine, look for the appropriate fire symbol and chemical hazard symbol. If
the magazine you are inspecting contains all of the same kind of ammunition, the symbols may be
located on the front doors as shown in Figure 1, in front of the magazine area, or posted at the entrance
to the storage site if all the magazines are storing the same hazard class.

Vegetation and Erosion
Inspect the outside of the magazine for proper vegetation. Usually a 50-foot firebreak is required.
Check the firebreak and the surrounding grounds around the magazine to ensure that they are free
from flammable material. Controlled burning of vegetation is not permitted within 50 feet of a magazine
storage site or within 200 feet of an outdoor storage site. Make sure there is no ground erosion around
the storage magazine.
