thermometers.
A procedure is set up to pick thermometers at random
intervals from the assembly room. Mr. Jones finally has 100 thermometers,
which he believes to be representative of the factory output. He puts them
all in the oil bath, the temperature of which is very accurately controlled
and kept at exactly 100 by means of a calibrated platinum resistance
thermometer.
After sufficient time has passed for everything to settle
down, Mr. Jones reads the 100 thermometers as carefully as possible and
records the results.
