(1) The commander must first identify the tasks his unit will perform that involve the M16 series
rifle. Through research of the requirement from higher headquarters, and his own evaluation of the test
of his unit's mission, he has scheduled the following training events for participation during this fiscal
planning year:
(a) Individual Weapons Qualification.
(b) One unit level FTX in which the ARTEP task "Defend the Convoy" will be trained. The
Commander determines this task will be performed once for training and once for evaluation. Both
performances will be with the Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System (MILES).
(c) The Division will conduct an FTX. The ARTEP task, "Defend the Convoy" and "Secure,
Prepare, and Defend New Operating Area" will be evaluated.
(d) The unit will undergo an External (Level 2) ARTEP evaluation.
(2) The commander must resource these tasks.
(a) The commander refers to TC 25-3, and finds that his Combat Service Support personnel
are required to qualify with the M16 series rifle, once per year. (See Figure 4.) The commander will
determine the type of course available for qualification of his unit, and select the appropriate tasks. For
our example, the unit will use a "Known Distance Range", and perform "Zero Qualification" (27
rounds), and "Record Fire Qualification" (96 rds). (See Figure 5.) The ammunition shown is that
required by one soldier to complete a training task.
(b) In our example, a unit requires a total of 123 rounds of 5.56 mm ball ammunition (A071)
to qualify each soldier to whom an M16 series weapon is assigned. In this unit, this equals 203 soldiers.
The total ammunition required is 24,969 rounds; (203 soldiers x 124 rounds per soldier). The
commander also identifies this training as Training Event Code-TPQ. See Appendix A for list of
Training Event Codes.
(c) The commander/training planner must now resource those tasks related to his TOE
mission as directed in the Army Training and Evaluation Program (ARTEP) manual. Each ARTEP
manual will contain an Appendix. The appendix will list each ARTEP mission that requires training
ammunition, a list of the ammunition required by nomenclature and Department of Defense
Identification Code (DODIC), and the quantity required per unit or exercise.
