2. Rewarehousing normally involves moving ammunition from one magazine or pad to another, or
rearranging ammunition pallets, boxes or containers within the same storage site to achieve the goal of
efficient warehousing. Because receipts and issues of ammunition seldom involve the same items at the
same time, planning the use of storage space can be very difficult. Generally, rewarehousing is beneficial
when merging lots of the same type items would make more space available at the magazine or storage
site. Rewarehousing is an ongoing process that must be performed well, in order to maintain an efficient
storage area.
a. There are three main factors that dictate if rewarehousing is required: using storage space
effectively; maintaining compliance with explosive storage safety standards; and maintaining lot
integrity.
(1) Factors which must be considered when planning for effective storage space use include:
(a) The types of facilities available will limit the types (by compatibility) and quantities (in regard
to quantity-distance) of ammunition that can be stored at a given site. In addition, the item
packaging configuration will affect the type and shape of stacking used to allow for maximum
space utilization. The physical packaging configuration will also dictate other restrictions
such as dunnage, material handling equipment (MHE), or personnel required to accomplish
stacking.
(b) During stacking operations care must be taken to ensure adequate ventilation space is
provided between the magazine walls and the ammunition being stacked. In addition, a
separation space must be left between different lots of ammunition. These separations
accomplish several functions. They provide air flow around the ammunition, which helps
reduce rot and mildew. They provide access aisles for inventory teams, and help reduce
confusion of lot numbers.
(c) Rewarehousing is required to comply with established storage space standards as defined in
AR 740-1. The compliance/non-compliance will normally be identified during the process of
completing DD Form 805 (Storage Space Management Report) in accordance with AR
740-1.
(d) Often rewarehousing will be required to free space for inbound shipments. In most cases this
rewarehousing requirement will revolve around maintaining quantity-distance and ammunition
